Ep 337 – The New Atheist’s Guide to Not Being a Total Asshole: Episode 8 (Family)

Written by on January 16, 2017

It’s hard enough parenting kids when Jesus is your co-pilot.  What do you do when he jumps ship? (or after you mutiny and throw him to the crocodiles — maybe that’s a better metaphor).
Sage is back to interview APEs Matt and Kristin (Atheist Parents Extraordinaire) — with a few comments from third-wheel-Glenn — as they discuss raising kids sans-faith-in-God.  Stick around to the end for a special announcement!

So fun having Kristin on! Pretty, pretty please do the parenting episodes. I really think there is a huge need for this. We’ve been out since 2009 and I feel like we’re doing okay in the parenting department, but I am craving relevant discussions with a godless parenting community.

I am enjoying this series. I quite identify with the atheist mindset; I don’t believe in a afterlife, or a God that is personal involve, or any of the magical thinking type stuff. I identify with much of what is said in these episodes. I am getting more subscribed to a pantheistic or Spinoza system of belief, redefining the term ‘God’ to mean everything in the universe, and have that be the perspective of reverance for universe/nature/creation.
With that said, my wife is still fully in the LDS church, and sometimes compromises get tricky. I still go to support her. I have to figure out ‘positive’ ways to work my beliefs in conversations. It can be rough to manage and I have to back off, many days relationships have to be worked on and belief/options need to be let go; mine mostly, because life is not fair. That’s OK, I do want life to be fair (fairness in life is a LDS ideal that sinks in my view). It’s a one day at a time thing, but I do trust the universe/nature/god, it will all work out. At least I have been able to be honest with a few around me, including my wife, about my beliefs. That’s been a big hard multi-year deal, so I will take that for today!
