My best friend from college let me know he was gay this past year. I also had a my former Home Teaching companion (he was 14 at the time) friend me on FB and he’s now openly gay. I’m extremely libertarian in my sexual views. I’m not going to march in a gay pride parade any more than I will in a heterosexual parade.
My last meeting at an LDS church was when my HPGL went off on homosexuality. I just couldn’t deal with the judgement anymore. My view of life was just more complex than the church allows.

We share an experience in common. I revealed to the bishop as his HPGL that I don’t believe anymore. I was released but I tried the middle way for about a month.
My last HP meeting the old guy teaching the lesson taught how stupid you would have to be to be an atheist and how deluded evolution was. The sad kicker in the story was this guy was assistant superintendent during his career in AZ. My face must have been beet red. I made some guarded statements to refute some of what they were saying but I mostly bit my tongue. I never went back.

I experience hypnagogic dreams, so I loved this episode since I can relate so easily as many of my dreams are of spiders also. When I was going through my faith crisis, I would have three or four episodes per night. My poor husband was constantly being woken up by my screaming or jumping on him to avoid spiders. Once I decided to stop attending church (officially be done) my dreams decreased down to one or two every two weeks. I was wondering if you experienced an increase while you were going through your own faith crisis? I felt a lot of anxiety during that time, which seems to be a trigger for me. Anyways, I loved this episode, and I love the podcast!!

I don’t have them very often now. Maybe twice a year. My last spider one was over a year ago. No idea why this is as my most common dream now is a recurrent anxiety dream where it’s mid semester and I haven’t been to class yet and I have to figure out how not to fail all my classes.
But I had a funny one last month. I was again paralyzed in bed, and a malignant force was descending on me. I had the distinct thought “oh my god, I have to be true to my principles that I will change my mind if I’m faced with new evidence and this is proof the paranormal is real!!!” When I snapped out of it I started laughing. It’s a powerful phenomenon.

Hey, I have the recurring “mid-semester” dream, too! And it’s usually in a Spanish literature class (those were always the bain of my university existence).

I really liked listening to this one Randy! Now I have to watch Six Feet Under.
I had something similar about halfway through watching “The Wire”. I was less racist. I didn’t think I was racist before, but I realized that I saw black people in a more well rounded way. They were people to me, more so than they had been before. A lot of the stereotypes that I had carried with me were no longer there.

I hear you Vader, if that is your real name. 😉
Studies show our biases are largely unconscious. A really interesting one was when white subjects were forced to watch a painful needle applied to white skin versus black skin, they had a more emotional response to the white skin. Somehow, we need to obliterate all unconscious in group/out group differentiations and make the whole damn human race one big in group. I’m a delusional dreamer. Lol

To quote Warren Beatty’s character from Bulworth, “Everybody just gotta keep fuckin’ everybody ’til they’re all the same color.”
Now THAT’s a policy I can get behind (so to speak).

Man, my wife makes fun of me because she sometimes finds me looking for spiders in our bed at 2am. I’ll have a light on, taking the pillows and blankets off the bed. I often have the most real experiences that spiders are lowering themselves onto us from the ceiling while we sleep. You don’t know how stoked I was to hear that I wasn’t alone in this. Good minisode! But I’m not sure how to get rid of the ick factor when it comes to spiders…

I have listened to a lot of podcasts from a lot of people. This one really resonated with me and has become one of my all time favorites. Your analogy is spot on.
