Ep 479 – Infant Singer Songwriter Contest

Written by on April 26, 2018

Glenn shares some songs he wrote back in 2009 and asks listeners, “hey, any fellow songwriters interested in doing a songwriting contest on Infants on Thrones?”  Seriously.  He really asks that.  Enjoy.

Beautiful songs, Glenn. And not to say that you don’t sing well when you do your parodies, but you are really singing nicely on these songs in a way I haven’t heard before. You remind me a bit of another Glenn… Tilbrook. I’d be down for contributing something for a songwriting contest, and would appreciate the challenge. I’d suggest you have it with a specific theme, even something pretty specific. That would encourage people to write something new. And you’d probably still get a variety of approaches to the same subject.

Thanks Eric. My concern with assigning a theme is that it would feel more restrictive and limiting rather than inclusive and welcoming. One of the things I have really liked about the essay contest (and the one we are about to have again) is that listeners can express themselves in whatever way they are most comfortable on whatever topic they are most interested in talking about — they can be really serious, or playful, can insert sound drops and/or music, or just straight talking or reading — and do it on anything that strikes their fancy. Then the listeners can vote and respond based on whatever it is that resonates the most with them.
I’d like to take a similar approach with a song writing contest — whether people write something original and new, or dust off something old (like I did) or write a song parody (like you have) — the song writing contest would become another way to encourage as wide a variety of participation and contribution from as many people as possible.
But maybe you’re right. Let’s see what happens. 🙂

Glenn, first of all, that last tune… Wow. I really loved that. The chord change at the top of each verse is so cool, and I always get a perverse joy from a fake ending. I thought the episode was over and almost missed that. Was about to press delete when the Easter egg was revealed.
Sure, I understand that you want to keep it open to encourage more people to get involved. Writing a song (or an essay) isn’t necessarily something anyone can or should just crank out, and it’s possible that someone has something in the attic that they’d love to pull out and share (like you did here), which they wouldn’t otherwise, which would be great. I’m just selfishly thinking that for a thing like that, I like the challenge of some restriction. And I also appreciate seeing how people can have several different interpretations of the same subject. Sometimes there can be great depth within something that doesn’t have a lot of “width,” if that makes sense.

I’d love it if you guys had a songwriting contest! I’d definitely submit something. I had actually been considering trying to create a musical essay of some sort but a straight up song is far more my style
